A lot of kids like sports and know about current sports stars but they don’t know that much about important sports figures of the past. Kid Athletes by David Stabler introduces readers to 16 stars in a lot of different sports, not just football, basketball, and baseball. Included are people like Babe Ruth, Bruce Lee, Muhammad Ali, Bobby Orr, Michael Jordan, and Danica Patrick.
“Every sports legend agrees on one thing: It’s impossible to practice to much. These kid athletes never gave up.”
The stories are all pretty short and are well written to keep your interest. Each of these stories talks about the sports heroes when they were kids. It tells about the obstacles they faced and how they overcame them. The drawings in the book are pretty cute, too. One thing I noticed is that a lot of the stories in this book are about men and only five are about women. This may be because a long time ago boys played sports a lot more than girls did. I think the author should write another book that includes more women so girls can be more excited about sports, too.
I think this book would be good for kids who like sports and from ages 8 to 11.
