Description
In Up High, a small boy goes for a Sunday walk in the city with his father. As he walks holding his father’s hand, the boy doesn’t like feeling very small in the busy city. So, he asks to go up high on his father’s shoulders. There, the boy doesn’t feel so small, and he can see the whole sky. As they walk, his father stops to talk, and they look in shop windows.
They enter a quiet park and eat lunch on a bench. Soon the boy notices all kinds of small things like ladybugs, frogs on lily pads, and ants. Suddenly, the boys feels very big. When it’s time to go home, the boy now wants to walk on his own until his father carries him as he sleeps.
Up High depicts a father and son’s lovely Sunday walk, while exploring a child’s feelings of being small and maybe a little lost in a big, busy world. At the same time, the book gently suggests that being small in relative and maybe the world isn’t quite so scary. This book would make a delightful read, especially before a nice, long walk.
