Description
J. Michael Straczynski is known for creating iconic science fiction television and for being the author of numerous science fiction books. His latest entry is a bit of a mixture of Frankenstein and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest in a world where those who act out against the norms of society are sent to American Renewal Centers.
Riley Diaz is half-Cuban and half-Irish, and she is ready to fight the system keeping her and others like her down. When she is arrested she is sent to one of these Centers, where she undergoes therapy, involuntary medication, solitary confinement, indelible rations, and more to break down dissidents like her. She meets a fellow patient who is known only as Frankenstein, the two form a bond to help them survive their surrounds but to fight back.
This book is not one of his hardest sci-fi books. It takes place in the near future and there isn’t the traditional spaceships, intergalactic exploration, and battles. Instead, it is Straczynski’s salvo against those who would take away our rights in the name of religion and how to fight back.
