Description
Adventuress Emily Blackwood has been hired by Heinrich Vogel to come to his castle in the Scottish Highlands, to catalogue his vast collection of taxidermy. Once there, she realizes what he actually wants is for her to find a lost treasure that he believes is hidden somewhere in the castle.
In her search, Emily finds two interesting things, a book titled The Birdcage Library and the diary of Hester Vogel, Heinrich’s sister-in-law, who jumped off the Brooklyn Bridge on the night of it’s opening, fifty years earlier. While reading these, Emily discovers many secrets of the past, which confronts her with her own. Only she can decide how this story will end.
This is a wonderfully woven tale about secrets and their power to ruin relationships, as well forging them into cages that we make for ourselves. The tale within a tale can sometimes go poorly, but each was executed perfectly. The storytelling and character development found here was brilliant. If you are looking for a gothic mystery with beautiful settings, this story is for you.
