Jo Brunini’s Never a Cloud is a family novel that takes secrecy seriously. It understands that the stories people tell to keep a household intact can do as much damage as the truths they avoid. The book centers on Violet Grey, a writer in Maine whose daughter Ava arrives at Otyrburn, a family place in the Scottish Highlands, and sets off a slow chain reaction through Margot Reid’s marriage, loyalties, and sense of self. From there, Brunini follows the strain that old lies put on children, siblings, and spouses, without rushing toward easy clarity.
What works best is the novel’s emotional honesty. Violet is observant without being cruel, and the women at the center of the story feel like complicated people rather than devices for a plot. Margot, Ava, and Violet all carry different versions of longing, pride, and disappointment, and Brunini lets those tensions breathe. George Lowell’s public scandal widens the book’s reach, but the novel never loses sight of the smaller private harms that matter more. The pace is slow, and the cast is large, so readers looking for a tight dramatic engine may feel the book wanders. Even so, the wandering feels deliberate. Brunini cares about the way family history settles into everyday life, and she gives that process time. Never a Cloud lingers because it trusts the reader to sit with unresolved feelings instead of packaging everything into tidy redemption.
