In Middletide, we meet Elijah Leith, who has just returned home to Point Orchards after failing to make it as a writer. Elijah is trying to rekindle his high school romance with Nakita, a girl from the neighboring reservation. But, when the body of Dr. Erin Landry is found on Elijah’s property exactly as his failed novel had described, Elijah and Nakita’s love will be put to the test. It will take everything they have to prove his innocence, especially in a town that’s all but condemned him already.
This story takes place over roughly twenty years, going back and forth between different timelines. You would think it would be disjointed, but it flows really smoothly. It is absolutely atmospheric and having lived near Puget Sound my whole life, the author does a wonderful job of bringing a beautiful area to life. There are no shallow characters here, or cozy mysteries to be solved. You can feel the heartbreak in every character, even Landry. For a debut novel, this was expertly done and I hope the author has many more novels to give. I highly recommend you check this story out.
