Description

Travis and Brent were once very good friends growing up. Now Travis is a medical technologist who struggles with a history plagued by mental illness and a lost dream to become a doctor. He strives to move past his chaotic past and enjoy the moment with Cindy, whom he finds himself falling for at work. Brent, who is now Chief of Surgery, becomes an egotistical and mean fellow who harbors hate towards Travis for a past transgression. When the two find themselves working together unexpectedly, Travis and Brent are forced to battle with their emotions and maintain a professional countenance. Unfortunately, strong emotions are not so easy to bury. Dee Bostic’s Love, Lies and Lab Coats hooks fans of pop fiction and romantic sequences by contrasting themes of broken bonds and chaotic relationships with the questionable premise of interracial, trauma-healing love.

While I loved Travis’s and Cindy’s relationship, I felt fearful for Brent’s lover. Travis and Cindy are both adorable since they have a healthy relationship despite their uncomfortable past. I enjoyed their adorable romantic expressions, such as Cindy’s appreciation for Travis: “Thanks to you, I’m getting over some of the insecurities.” Brent’s relationship with his lover, Danielle, however, is quite narcissistic and frightening, as he doesn’t seem to care about her wellbeing. My eagerness to see Danielle escape his clutches is one of the many reasons I couldn’t put the book down.

The book’s well-developed backstories add an extra layer of originality to it. For example, Travis expresses his regret for dropping out of medical school with words like, “Here I am, Travis the Medical School dropout.” Throughout the story, we get to see how the past and the present mix to create a deeply evocative and memorable tale.

Dee’s smart execution of multiple viewpoints offers readers a broad, all-encompassing view of the tale as it weaves together various backstories, characters, struggles, and goals in perfect harmony. The book comprises a diverse collection of themes, from heartbreak to racial issues, mental health, narcissism, resentment, health care, healing, romance, healthy living, politics, and more. Since I’m passionate about health and diet, I loved that I came across the profound conversation about how many diseases could be prevented by avoiding soda, sugar, and other processed foods.

Overall, I had a blast with Love, Lies and Lab Coats and found myself completely engaged in the strong emotions and familiar struggles. From the enchanting characters to the sensational love sparks and the enlightening views on societal issues, the book has a brilliant mix that keeps you glued to it from start to finish. This moderately dramatic and thought-provoking gem is perfect for a lazy weekend or holiday.
