Description

This novel has received much critical acclaim, but has left me adrift. There are many main characters in this story; Maggie who is pregnant and leaving London with her partner, Ed. Ed is a bicycle courier who has a secret life. Phil is Maggie’s best friend who rooms with his lover, Keith. Callum is a drug dealer who is getting married to Holly and is Phil’s brother. Rosaleen is Phil and Callum’s mother and has received a fatal diagnosis. All of the thirty-something hipsters are sexually fluid, mindless and interchangeable. The novel takes place in London where a whale has become stuck up the Thames and the newscaster looks like Princess Diana. Just like that whale, the story has left me up the river looking for meaning, context and a likable character. One may suppose that this style of writing reflects the aimlessness of that generation, but the book also focuses on Rosaleen, her operation and her sons. If the meaning of the book is that life is short, then this book has taken too much of my time.
