Anji Kills a King is the debut novel by writer and sci-fi/fantasy influencer Evan Leikam. Leikam’s story follows a servant’s escape from the castle where she’s employed after killing the king. Quickly, a bounty was placed on Anji’s head. While in disguise, Anji is surprised by her own capture and the identity of her captor. Seized by a member of the Menagerie, famed mercenaries, Anji is now the prisoner of Hawk, a fearless sword master. Anja soon finds out that Hawk will do anything to keep Anja alive and, in her possession, at least till the bounty is paid.
The story Leikam tells is not a new one. Grizzled, old, and wise elder finds herself in the company of a young, naive, and cocky companion. Even though the partnership is unwanted by both parties, both learn and grow from the unlikely and tenuous alliance. Leikam presents his story as a fast-paced, kick-ass, page-turning fantasy. From the prologue, Leikam’s novel takes off and never slows down. And even though his characters fit stereotypes too well, their dynamic presence and continuous action make Leikam’s novel a fun read.
