Description
It’s Philadelphia 1921 and Edie Shippen has returned home after recovering from influenza for three years in California. Edie comes home only to find that her twin sister is engaged to her childhood sweetheart. Gil Lawless has been a shell of himself since the loss of his wife and the end of the war. He buries himself in his work at the city morgue in an attempt to calm his nerves. There’s no shortage of work for Gil as young women are found murdered all over the city. When Gil’s sister goes missing, he enlists the help of Edie, his sister’s employer, to put an end to the murders. But this may just be A Deadly Endeavor that neither will survive.
While this is a murder mystery, it is also an enjoyable look into the Roaring Twenties. I thought the author did a great job bringing this decade to life. The trauma, both physical and mental, for both Edie and Gil gives their characters depth, adding a realistic element to the story. Having two possible suspects keeps you guessing until the end with the motive a surprise to everyone. If you enjoy murder mysteries or historical fiction, check this out.
