Sir Gawain Green Knight

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is Michael Morpurgo’s retelling of a classic tale. Sir Gawain is a knight of King Arthur’s famous Round Table. One Christmas, a giant Green Knight enters their feast celebration and challenges the knights to a contest. He will allow a knight to take one swing at him with an ax and one year and a day later, the knight must present himself to the Green Knight to allow the giant to take one swing at the knight. The book tells of Sir Gawain’s quest to meet the challenge.

“I have heard, as all the world has heard, how you have made of this place the most wondrous kingdom on earth, and gathered around you the most worthy, courageous, and chivalrous knights that ever lived.”

This is pretty much the same story that has been around for many years. The trials that Sir Gawain faces are hard for him although why they’re hard could have been explained more. Younger children may not understand why some of the trials are so hard for him. The book was exciting although it was a little unclear in the beginning. Once you get used to the writing style, you should be able to understand it well. There are several morals to the story that all people need to learn to include not giving in to temptation and keeping your promises. These are lessons that are not so popular now, but should be.

This is a book that is easy to read, but makes you think.
