YOU HAVE QUESTIONS & WE HAVE ANSWERS

  • What is a book review and what is the purpose of one?

A book review is an opinion, it should avoid being bias and opinions should be supported with examples from the book.

    • Example of Opinion: “The book started out slow, taking four chapters just to explain the backstory.”
    • Example of Bias: “The book had too many references to Aliens. We all know Aliens don’t exist.”

A book review is also not a summary. There is never a reason to fill a review with a summary as a book’s summary has already been written and can be found either on the back of the book or on the inside cover. It is okay to include 2-3 sentences about the book to start a review.

    • Example: “”Coraline, a book about a young girl who moves into a new house and finds a strange door in the wall, is nothing like the movie. It’s much, much darker and one of Neil Gaiman’s most recognizable books.”

A book review should also not have “coulda-shoulda” statements. If you want a different story than the one written, then write it!

    • Example: “The author should have made the main character a girl and the setting on Mars instead of taking place in a forest.”
  • What is a video book review and who can submit them?

Some people feel more alive in front of a camera. Instead of writing, we accept 2-5 minute videos. Check out one of our video reviews here

Anyone of any age can submit a video review as long as they have a camera and know how to edit the videos. Many video player software includes free editing tools and tutorials can easily be found with a Google search! If this option is of interest to you, let us know and we’ll help you get started!

  • Most Book Review Companies only want experienced reviewers. Why are you different?

Economics. Seriously. Most companies only want a staff of highly experienced writers who are capable of fluffing up reviews. These fluffed reviews are what appeal to Indie-authors, small presses, and literary agents who often pay very large sums for their books to be reviewed. Money is the driving force behind many of these companies, which often blurs the lines between writing an honest review and writing a review that will appease a paying client.

We’re not a money driven company. In fact, most months we have more money going out on business expenses than coming in and we’re absolutely okay with our business model! While we also offer paid services, ours are a fraction of the cost and extremely affordable. And, unlike most companies, each of our services are backed by a happiness guarantee. If the client isn’t satisfied, they can exchange their service for website and social media advertising—ad size and run length varies upon service—therefore our services stay true to heart, with honesty being the best medicine.

We can’t emphasize enough how much we encourage people who aren’t English majors to apply and we have science to back our reasoning!

    • The more you read and write, the better you become. This goes for all ages, whether you are just learning to read, are new to the English language, have a learning disability, or simply not a strong reader or writer.
    • Writing a book review is actually a very easy process and we provide a very simple step-by-step process that takes all of the stress out of the process, leaving you more time to enjoy yourself while building not only valuable skills, but also self-confidence and self-esteem! We really do care and are here for each reviewer every step of the way!
  • Can my children review books? What if they are just learning to read?

Yes! We accept reviewers who are at least 4 years of age.

    • If your child can’t read and write or is learning to read and write, they must have an adult willing to help them.
      • 1- Read the book to the child
      • 2- Ask the child for their opinion, but avoid yes or no questions
      • 3- Write the child’s answers into a review.
      • 4- Here is an example of an adult helping a child write a book review.

If your child can read and write, we encourage them to write their own reviews. It helps them build critical skills needed to be successful in life and it builds confidence. Plus, they’re super cute to read!

  • Are the books really free? What's the catch?

Yes, you keep the books and there is no catch. The process is simple. Publishers and authors submit books to us they would like reviewed. We send you the books that you choose and you have approximately 30 days to read the book and submit the review to us. If you review a book, you really do keep it after you have read it and submitted a review. If you don’t review the book or you don’t send it back to us within 3 days after receiving it, you can be billed full price for the book. It is only fair.

The coolest part is many of our books come in many different formats you will never be able to buy. Some will have different covers, some might be unbound, and some might be an ARC, an Advanced Reading Copy, which are a limited print and never for sale!

We also ship the books to you at our expense!

  • What if I don't like a book that I choose to review?

While we provide a book’s cover and a link to the book’s summary, on occasion you still might not like a book once you have started reading it. We never recommend reviewing a book you couldn’t “get into”, isn’t your typical genre, or you only have bias for. Just let us know and send it back so it can be available to another reviewer to read.

  • I travel a lot. Is there a monthly requirement?

Nope. You can read as little or as many books as your like. All we ask is if you are taking a break or will be away for more than a month, to please let us know.

  • I live outside the USA. Can I still review books?

Yes! While we can’t ship books outside of the USA (due to shipping costs), we have plenty of eBooks to choose from!

If you have an FPO/AP address, we can ship books to you.

  • Are the books real or are they ebooks?

Both! Our books consist of hardcover, paperback, comics, audiobooks, ebooks, activity kit books, high-end big books, and more!

  • I'm a person of importance. Can I write book reviews under a pen name?

Yes. While we strive to put a face to each review, if you are someone of importance, are in a legal situation, or you like to review erotica, we will protect your privacy.

    • Example 1- You are a schoolteacher who loves to relax with a good book that just happens to be erotica.
    • Example 2- You work for Book Publisher A, but really love to read books by Book Publisher B, a closely competing company.
    • Example 3- You work with incarcerated youth or victims of domestic violence.
    • Example 4- You are an author, big or small, and want to avoid unsolicited requests for a review.

  • I don't want to review books, but can I write articles for San Diego Book Review?

Yes! If the articles are based around writing, books or literacy in some way, we’ll gladly accept guest articles. If you are interested in having your own column, send us an email and let us know what you have in mind!

  • Can you tell me more about how teacher and group reviewing works?

There is a lot of content pertaining to teachers and groups. Drop us an email for simply apply and go from there. There’s no strings attached!

  • I'm learning English. Can I still be a reviewer of books?

Definitely and we encourage you to apply! We are always looking for reviewers! Most of us have busy lives and it takes a lot of courage and commitment to move to another country and learn their native tongue, especially English! More than half of our adult reviewers review children’s books and these are a great resource for ESL. Plus, you get to keep the books! We edit all reviews prior to posting, so there is never a need to worry about spelling and grammar and if we have any questions about your review, we ask!

If you’re interested in reviewing books in a foreign language, please let us know as we work with publishers from around the world!

  • Can I still be a book reviewer if I struggle with reading and writing?

Yes! And we encourage you to apply! Maybe you are dyslexic, struggle with spelling, or have been told you have low comprehension. Don’t ever let these get in the way of picking up a good book and reading! We want to help! Reviewing books is a great way to improve all of these, build confidence and self-esteem! We have a simple and easy to use step-by-step method to writing a review that will reduce your stress, provide encouragement, and we are always here to help! And, we edit all of our reviews prior to posting them so you don’t have to worry about the small stuff and can focus on the good stuff; BOOKS!!

  • I’ve never written a book review before and I’m nervous about applying. Why should I become a book reviewer?

It’s okay to be nervous. While we do ask for 3 review samples on the application, this isn’t a test. This is to prove to us that you are serious about becoming a reviewer. We don’t care that “ervey stecennee yu writ have tu be depcierehd” or that you employ codeswitching midsentence to explain “un milk is very fuego”. Reading and writing book reviews helps build the skills to fight back against dyslexia, in mastering the English language, in building comprehension and simply to become a better reader and writer. AND, we want to help! You choose the books you want to review, whether it is a 12 page Learn to Read type book, a luxurious art book, or whatever book interests you!

Did I mention you get free books and you get to keep them?! We are serious. There is no catch. Everyone benefits from reducing illiteracy!
